The call came from a harried mother to Frank, she was in a trailer park and their young dog was simply too much to deal with, "Could someone come and get him?". Since he was on our side of the bay, Sue and I went up to Concord. It was a nice trailer park but the problem was obvious as we went inside. A mother, going through a divorce, with one toddler, two young children, (under 10 years old), and a teen aged boy from the soon to be ex-husband's previous marriage, was at home with the three younger children and the Cairn was on a leash at her side. It was obvious that she was vainly trying to work on housebreaking the dog but that the kids were more than enough for her to deal with. She was extremely grateful that we picked the guy up.
Got him home and sorted him
out. He was young and largely untrained but a very quick
introduction to our rules and he said, "OK, I can do that." The name
was not one I wanted to tell new adopters since it implied that he
might have a problem. Still it fit. Chewy was an easy
dog, a little large but he was in good shape and responded well to
commands. Just looking for a good buddy.
The request from him was from a man out in the valley. I had
him come over and visit. While he professed that he wanted a
dog for his 10 year old son, it was apparent that Chewy would be his
day time companion. He was on the road making calls out in the
country and Chewy was the kind of dog that wanted to always be with
someone.
A subsequent call from the new
owner confirmed my suspicions. Chewy is an "on The Road" dog
and loving every minute of it.
Chewy's new owner so loved his new
best friend that he thought his dad should have one. When
Rescue got a call for a pickup of a dog but Rescue had no room for
the new Rescue, Chewy's owner was called. He was glad to
facilitate an owner-to-owner transfer*, so he picked up this new
dog. The plan was to turn it over to his dad, but fate had
different ideas. Let's just leave it with the message on our
phone machine, "Chewy has a new sister."
